Background: A military band was at hand in Manila to welcome delegates attending the Ninth annual Meeting of the Association of South East Asian Nations, ASEAN.
Delegates from the members countries of ASEAN, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, are meeting to discuss recent developments in South East Asia, especially where such development affect relations of South East Asian nations to the rest ??? the world. As well as the five permanent member nations of Asean a representative of Papua New Guinea was also invited to attend the conference as an observer. Opening the conference, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines said the end of the Indo-Chine war created new opportunities for cooperation amongst countries with different ideologies......but also posed a new set of anxieties.
