The killing has not delayed the trial of the 15 Brigades members in Turin. On Monday (April 10) in Turin, five armed raiders attacked a gynaecologist in his consulting rooms, shooting him seven times in the legs and shoulders, police said. The masked attackers locked up waiting patients at pistol point, scrawled 'Proletarian Combat Squads' on the wall, and subjected the doctor to a brief 'trial' before shooting him. There was no immediate explanation for the shooting, but the doctor was involved in a case a few months ago, when a patient died after he had refused to recommend her for the abortion she requested on medical grounds.

Background: In the northern Italian city of Turin, three gunmen on Tuesday (11 April) shots and killed a guard from the prison where 15 Red Brigades urban guerrillas are being held while on trial for subversion. The dying guard shot and wounded one of the gunmen, who was later arrested at a medical clinic.

SYNOPSIS: The guard was shot in the back as he was leaving his home for the prison. His assailants were said to be two men and a woman.

Police said Lorenzo Cutugno was fatally hit when he stepped from the lift in his apartment building. He did not die immediately. He managed to pull his own pistol and fired back at his attackers, while staggering outside, where he finally collapsed. The wounded assassin, who has been identified as a 28-year-old Italian born in France, was reported in a serious condition.

He needed major surgery for bullet wounds in his chest, groin and back.

The Red Brigades have not claimed responsibility, but police sources said the murder was similar to previous Brigades killings. Meanwhile, the latest message released by the Red Brigades to several Italian newspapers made no specific demands on the future of kidnapped politician. Aldo Moro.
