Background: Israel is anxiously awaiting President Nixon's decision on whether he will provide them with more jet fighters and fighter bombers. The decision is expected to be announced on Monday (March 23rd).

Meanwhile, controversy builds up in the United States where Press reports say that the President will refuse the Israeli request for more aircraft.

Isreal has asked for more supersonic Phantom fighter bombers and more of the slower Skyhawk fighters. Although there has been no official announcement of how many aircraft she has requested, the figures generally mentioned are 25 Phantoms and between 80 and 100 Skyhawks. Israel ordered 50 Phantoms and 80 Skyhawks from the Johnson administration and these are now being delivered.

The Israeli Premier, Mrs. Golda Meir, asked for the additional aircraft when she visited the United States recently. In January President Nixon said he would give a decision on the aircraft within 30 days-but the deadline passed without an announcement.

Now the decision is expected to be made on Monday by the Secretary of State, Mr. William P. Rogers. According to reports President Nixon feels that Israel still has air superiority over the Arab countries, but that the administration should keep Israeli's security needs under consideration.
