Background: FOR MANY WEST BERLINERS AUG 13 - FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE ERECTION OF THE WALL THAT DIVIDES THE CITY - A SILENT DEMONSTRATION WAS EVIDENTLY NOT ENOUGH TO EXPRESS THEIR CONTINUING RESENTMENT AGAINST THE MASSIVE BARRIER. OVER 500 PEOPLE, LED BY A YOUNG MAN CARRYING A 7-FOOT WOODEN CROSS, INSCRIBED "WE ACCUSE", MARCHED ALONG THE WALL THAT AFTERNOON CHANTING "THE WALL MUST GO".

PRIVATE CARS JOINED THE IMPROMPTU PROCESSION AND ABOUT 50 WEST BERLIN POLICEMEN IN RADIO PATROL CARS WITH SIRENS BLARING, AND ON MOTOR-CYCLES, ACCOMPANIED IT, BUT DID NOT INTERFERE.

PEOPLE WATCHED FROM BUILDINGS ON THE EAST SIDE AS THE MARCHERS PASSED ALONG THE WALL. THE GROUP WITH THE WOODEN CROSS HAD EARLIER CAUSED AN EXCHANGE OF TEAR-GAS GRENADES BETWEEN EAST AND WEST BERLIN POLICE ACROSS THE WALL IN THE KREUZBERG DISTRICT.

A THREE-MINUTE "SILENCE" TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY AT MIDDAY WAS SHATTERED BY THE MASS SHOOTING OF CAR AND LORRY HORNS AND THE TOLLING OF THE WEST BERLIN "FREEDOM BELL" (SEE PROD 4610). WHEN ANGRY WEST BERLINERS GATHERED AT THE WALL SHOUTING "DOWN WITH ULBRICHT" AND "DOWN WITH THE WALL", EAST GERMAN TROOPS ATTEMPTED TO DISPERSE THEM WITH HIGH-PRESSURE WATER JETS AND TEAR GAS. THE DEMONSTRATORS RETALIATED WITH A HAIL OF STONES.
