Background: Petrol rationing in Rhodesia has ended. The five-year restriction was abolished on Thursday (13 May) evening and the Government has emphasised that there will be no change in the price of petrol.

Officials hope that the end of the restriction will aid the Rhodesian tourist programme -- reported to have declined when private motorists were rationed following the oil embargos placed on Rhodesia as a result of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1966.

SYNOPSIS: In Salisbury on Friday, Rhodesians were able to buy petrol without ration cards for the first time in five years. The end to petrol restriction was announced at midnight on Thursday by Mr Jack Musset, the Minister of Commerce and Industry.

Following widespread fears that the price of petrol could increase, Mr Musset said that his Ministry was considering dropping the price. But the main advantage to Rhodesians is the abolition of the ration and identity cards.
