TRANSCRIPT SEQUENCE 1: PAISLEY: "I JUST WANT TO MAKE A VERY BRIEF STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF MY COLLEAGUES AND MYSELF. WE CAME TO COURT THIS MORNING, WE LODGED CERTAIN OBJECTIONS, WE TOLD THE MAGISTRATES THAT WE WERE PREPARED TO GO AHEAD WITH THIS CASE WITHOUT PREJUDICE. WE SAID INJUSTICE WAS DUMB AND WAS GOING TO SEEM TO BE DUMB. AND THEN ONE OF THE MAGISTRATES SAID THAT I'D BEEN GUILTY OF CONTEMPT AND WOULD I WITHDRAW. I SAID THAT I WOULD NOT AND I ASKED LEAVE TO LEAVE THE COURT AND THE POLICE THEN STARTED TO FIGHT WITH US. AND IT WAS THROUGH ME THAT THE SILENCE CAME AGAIN, THE MAGISTRATES CAME IN AND THOUGHT THEY WOULD COLLAR ME WITH A LITTLE HOMILY."

(ALL SING "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN")

PAISLEY: "LET'S HAVE A WEE PRAYER. FATHER, FATHER IN HEAVEN, WE BOW BEFORE THEE. WE KNOW THAT THERE IS A CONSPIRACY IN THIS LAND, THAT PUT US INTO JAIL. AND WE REMEMBER THAT CHRIST WAS TAKEN FROM PRISON AND FROM JUDGEMENT. AND LORD, WE THANK THEE FOR THE GRACE AND COURAGE AND WISDOM THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN TO US, AND MIGHT ALL TODAY THROUGHOUT THE COTTAGES AND THE HAMLETS AND THE HOMES AND THE HOUSES OF THIS PROVINCE, THERE ARE STILL THOUSANDS THAT SHALL NOT BOW THE KNEE TO THE PEOPLE ... (DROWNED OUT BY AMENS AND HEAR-HEARS) ... AND WE PRAY THAT YOU PRESERVE US, HEAR THOU OUR PRAYER, SEMINATE US WITH THY BLESSING, AND WE PRAY FOR THOSE THAT DESPITEFULLY USE US."

Background: NORTHERN IRELAND'S MILITANT PROTESTANT LEADER, THE REVEREND IAN PAISLEY, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) WAS FOUND GUILTY OF TAKING PART IN AN UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY LAST NOVEMBER. HE WAS SENTENCED TO THREE MONTHS IMPRISONMENT AFTER A SCENE IN COURT DURING WHICH HE STORMED OUT DARING THE COURT TO ARREST HIM FOR CONTEMPT. ALSO SENTENCED WAS MAJOR RONALD BUNTING, SELF-STYLED COMMANDANT OF THE LOYAL CITIZENS OF ULSTER. BOTH WERE GREETED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF SUPPORTERS AS THEY LEFT THE COURT.

THE REVEREND PAISLEY AND MAJOR BUNTING HAD BEEN ARRESTED LAST NOVEMBER 30TH AFTER A CLASH BETWEEN SEVERAL HUNDRED MEMBERS OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC MINORITY FACTION OF NORTHERN IRELAND AND A GROUP OF PROTESTANT MILITANTS.

THE ROMAN CATHOLICS WERE DEMANDING A BIGGER SHARE OF JOBS AND HOUSES IN NORTHERN IRELAND. PRIOR TO THE CLASH BETWEEN THE TWO RIVAL FACTIONS, THE PROTESTANT GROUP, LED BY THE REVEREND PAISLEY, HAD OCCUPIED THE TOWN CENTRE CONFINING CAMERAMEN AND NEWSPAPERMEN TO THEIR HOTELS, THREATENING VIOLENT REPRISALS IF ANY PICTURES WERE TAKEN.

AT YESTERDAY'S TRIAL, REVEREND PAISLEY ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE THE COURT WHEN HE WAS TOLD THAT HIS REMARKS TO THE MAGISTRATES COULD BE TAKEN AS CONTEMPT OF COURT. REVEREND PAISLEY REFUSED TO APOLOGISE AFTER SAYING THAT "INJUSTICE WILL BE DONE" IF THE CASE WENT AHEAD. MAJOR BUNTING SHOUTED "I OBJECT AS A BRITISH CITIZEN ..."
THE MAGISTRATE ORDERED MAJOR BUNTING TO BE REMOVED FROM COURT AND REVEREND PAISLEY ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE AS WELL. THERE WAS MUCH CONFUSION WITH SOME SHOUTING "EVERYBODY OUT", "LET HIM OUT" OR "DON'T TOUCH HIM". FINALLY, REVEREND PAISLEY RETURNED TO HIS SEAT AND WAITED FOR SENTENCE.
