Background: MORE THAN 200 GUESTS ATTENDED A RECEPTION AT THE GHANA HIGH COMMISSION IN LONDON TONIGHT (FRIDAY) TO MARK THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE OVERTHROW OF KWAME NKRUMAH. DR NKRUMAH, FORMER PRESIDENT OF GHANA, WAS OUSTED BY A COUP WHILE ON A VISIT TO THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

THE GUESTS AT THE RECEPTION WERE RECEIVED BY THE GHANA HIGH COMMISSIONER IN LONDON, MAJOR S.K. ANTHONY, AND MRS ANTHONY. IN ACCRA, THE OCCASION WAS MARKED BY AN AMNESTY FOR PRISONERS AND A PLEDGE BY THE MILITARY LEADERS THAT THEY WOULD HAND OVER POWER TO A "DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED" CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AT THE SAME TIME, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL JOSEPH ANKRAH, WHO IS CHAIRMAN OF THE RULING NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, PROMISED TO PROTECT THE COUNTRY FROM ANY ATTEMPTS BY NKRUMAH TO REGAIN POWER. DR NKRUMAH IS NOW LIVING IN EXILE IN CONAKRY, GUINEA. THE ANNIVERSARY BROUGHT NO PERSONAL REACTION FROM HIM, BUT GUINEA RADIO ATTACKED THE LIBERATION COUNCIL AND SAID IT HAD BROUGHT A CLIMATE OF GENERAL INSECURITY TO GHANA.
