Background: In Djarkarta on Tuesday, 20,000 people demonstrated calling on the Indonesian Government to immediate ratify the recent proposals drawn up in Bangkok to end confrontation against Malaysia.

The proposals were drawn up by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr. Adam Malik and the Malaysian Deputy Premier, Tun Abdul Razak.

Leaders of the powerful university and high school students action fronts, Kami and Kappi, and other organisations, addressed the crowd.

The rally also supported a Government decision to place peace negotiations in the hands of Lieutenant-General Suharto, Chief of the General Staff and holder of executive power in the State.

(On Tuesday General Suharto and Mr. Mohammed Ghazali Shaffie, the Malaysian Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded several days of talks in Djakarta aimed at finding a formula to end Indonesia's three-year long confrontation against Malaysia.)
