Background: In the North American zone of the world cup qualifying competition Mexico played the United States on Friday (15 October).

SYNOPSIS: The game was played in the central Mexican town of Puebla, and the home crowd used an original method of making their allegiance known.

Many of the world's most talented players have played in the United States leagues, but of course their world cup side has to rely on native born talent-and so far soccer is still a minor sport in the United States. Mexico in the green shirts kicked off playing form right to left. Francisco Solis put them ahead after 28 minutes, and quarter of an hour later this neat back-heel set up a second goal for Pedro Damian.

The United States now attacking the goal to the right started second half. The Mexican fans with their much longer tradition of soccer playing, were expecting more than just two goals. Every goal can be vital in these world cup qualifying competitions because qualification can be decided on goal difference-but the United States side hung on determinedly until a trip just seven minutes form time brought the Mexicans a penalty. Some of the Americans thought the Mexican player had exaggerated the incident to earn the penalty, but the referee was adamant Hugo Davila took the penalty but he only just beat the goalkeeper's dive.

With only five minutes left to add to their 3-0 lead the Mexicans pressed forward anxiously. This volley brought a fine save form the United States goalkeeper but the final whistle put paid to Mexican hopes of any more goals. So while they finished clear winners, the Mexicans were unable to overwhelm the Americans.
