Later that day, General Lamizana pledged to the nation he would work for its national unity. He appealed to the women of upper volta to participate in building up the nation.

Background: In Upper Volta, General Sangoule Lamizana who has been re-elected as President for five years was sworn ion on Saturday (4 June).
SYNOPSIS: The ceremony took place at the National Assembly building in Ouagadougou, where the President was met by the President of the Assembly, Gerard Kango Ouedraogo. President Lamizana who came to power after a military coup in 1966, was re-elected over his rival. Mr. Macaire Ouedraogo of the National union for the Defence of Democracy party. It was Upper Volta's first democratic Presidential election for 12 years.
Not everyone was happy with the result. The swearing-in ceremony was boycotted by 28 members of the Opposition in the Assembly.
Mr. Ouedraogo administered the oath of office to President Lamizana. Plans for a return to multi-party afar were announced by General Lamizana last October and approved in a referendum the following month.
