Background: VISNEWS filmed at the Nuclear Physics Division, Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston, June 1 during a Press visit.

Members of the Press were shown research equipment and some of the activities at this leading British research centre - the Nuclear Physics Research Division, - now under the direction of Dr. N. Levin, who succeeded Sir William Penney.

Formed with the object of obtaining technical data of the Defence Programme, the Division provides information of much value in other fields of activity.

A notable piece of equipment on view was the 12 M eV Tandem Van de Graaff electrostatic generator, largest of its kind in the world, designed to open up a new region in which the properties of nuclear may be studied.

This Large machine is housed in a tower containing four floors. (see in the film, together with a model of the whole installation). On the first floor is the Target Room, the top of the pressure vessel being on the third floor. In the ground floor investigation Room are numerous instruments giving information on the work being done by the generator. The fourth floor houses the controls.

A MeV - million electron volts - is the energy acquired by an electron or equal charge in going through a potential of one million volts. On the atomic scale such an energy is enormous, and by comparison the energies liberated during chemical reactions are of the order of a few electron volts. The tandem generator was designed by A.W.R.E. in collaboration with Harwell research establishment and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co. Ltd.
