Background: United States Secretary of States, Dr. Henry Kissinger, had talks with Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, in Jerusalem on Thursday (2 May), in an attempt to secure a separation of forces on the Syrian front.
Dr. Kissinger had come from Egypt on Thursday and was to go on to Syria the next day. He is scheduled to return to israel after talks with the Syrian President Hafez Assad.
Israeli Foreign Minister, Mr. Abba Eban, described the talks as "very thorough ... clarifying elements of the possibility of disengagement with Syria".
On Thursday there were fierce air and artillery battles on the Golan Heights between Israeli and Syrian forces. when Dr. Kissinger was asked if the fighting was affecting the peace talks, he said; "It would be far better if there were no pressure on the negotiations by either side, particularly of the military variety."
