Background: After an absorbing struggle in the singles semi-final of the French Lawn Tennis Championships in Paris May 25, M. Santana of Spain finally beat Australian R. Laver 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
It was no easy victory for Santana. Laver, with his quick footwork and superb wrists, was a difficult player to corner. But Santana, if only for his better concentration, deserved to win this close match. At one moment Santana had to fight his way up from two sets to one in Laver's favour.
N. Pietrangeli of Italy - champion for the past two years - beat J. Lundquist of Sweden 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, in the other semi-final match.
