Background: Providing electricity for the people of the rural areas of Africa is one important way of stopping a drift from their own areas, the Fourth Congress of the Union of Producers, Conveyers and Distributors of Electrical Energy in african Countries heard last Friday (December 7).

This was one of the arguments of the President of the Union, Mr. L. Konan of the Ivory Coast, to the delegates from nine African nations attending the five day Congress in the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

Mr. Kenan also emphasised the need for the exchange of information and assistance between the African nations.

Earlier the Vice President of the Union, Mr. Taylor E. Major of Liberia, said he hoped the Union would foresee and develop methods by which enough energy could be produced and conserved for Africa's future needs.

The conference is being attended by representatives from the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Togo, Zaire, Upper Volta, Gabon, Niger, the Congo Republic and Senegal Mauritius was also represented.

SYNOPSIS: The Congress planned to examine recommendations on training and rural electrification from the last Congress held in the Ivory Coast in June.

The President of the Union, Mr. L. Konan of the Ivory Coast, stressed the importance of providing electricity for the people of the rural areas.

He said it would help to stop people drifting from their own areas.
