Background: Visnews cameras caught a glimpse of the furious contest of a tiger shark attacking a giant blue marlin hooked North of San Juan, Puerto Rico, when filming the U.S. Island's fifth deep sea game fish contest.

The two giants, lashed in fury in this unexpected contest within a contest - claimed to be the world's second largest.

These waters are reputedly the best for hooking blue marlin in the South West Atlantic where the Greater and Lesser Antilles enclose the Caribbean Sea to the South. Game anglers from clubs in the U.S., Venezuela, and Mexico jousted with the Puerto Ricans for the trophies.

Fifteen blue marlins were caught during the first two days of the six day tournament -- a new world record. Jim O'donell, of the Washington, D.C. Team, scored the winning points by hooking, the last day of the tourney, a 304 pound blue marlin.

Ernesto (Chilo) Bird, prominent Puerto Rican banker and game fisherman, was the man who fought both Marlin and shark angling for marlin four miles off San Juan, he hooked a big one (according to his reckoning, the fish could have weighed from 500 to 600 pounds). Bird was using a number fifty line, whose tensile strength was only fifteen pounds. This circumstances enhanced the importance of the marlin -- a probable world record.

But when the fight between man, fish and sea was at its height, the vicious tiger shark attacked. A member of Bird's crew tried to kill the shark with a loaded bait but in its fight to free itself from the hook, the shark cut with its dorsal fin his line.

At San Juan's yacht club, Jim O'Donell received on behalf of the National Game Fish Conservation Club, the $3,000 Schaeffer Cup. The Washington team scored 1349.5 points. Puerto Rico's Nautical club took second place, Venezuela's Playa Grande Club was third.
