Background: Danish cyclist, Ole Ritter, failed to set a new one-hour distance record in Mexico City on Sunday (3 November).

Ritter made his attempt at Mexico City's Olympic cycling track -- one of the best in the world -- and had the advantage of the rarefied atmosphere at 7350 feet (2270 metres) above sea level.

Ritter had prepared for the attempt for months. But on the day, he wasn't up to it.

As he cycled around the wooden-floored track behind a pace-setting motorcycle, Ritter realised he had lost too much time to break the record, and used the rest of the attempt as a training run.

The record is held by international champion, Eddy Merckx of Belgium -- 49.431 kilometres for the hour.

Two days later, Ritter again failed to break Merckx's record.
