Background: Led by Gershon Solomon, a Jerusalem City Councillor of the Likud faction, a group of activists made another attempt to stage a prayer session on the Temple Mount, today, on the Jewish Day of Mourning and Fasting, "Tisha be Av" (9th day of the month of Av), the day of the distraction of the Temple. The group consisted of young people and their "Betar" supporters (Betar is the name of the youth movement of the Likud rightist faction) but police were determined to prevent this provocative act which last year led to widespread West Bank rioting, when a group of Betar youth succeeded in infiltrating the Mount and staging a prayer. The Temple Mount is holy to both Jews and Arabs as the Dome of the Rock and the El Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest site, were built on the spot where King Salomon's temple once stood. Ultra-orthodox Jews do not tread on the mount for fear of walking where the Holy of Holiest once stood and the Sephardie Chief Rabbi has supported this attitude whilst Chief Rabbi Goren (Ashkenazi) maintains there are certain areas where Jews could tread without this fear but they would have to approach him for exact instructions.- The group, having decided not to resort to violence in order to press their point, was stopped outside Mighrabi Gate and recited from the Book of Lamentations before dispersing peacefully.
