Background: The Canadian Foreign Minister, Mr. Mitchell Sharp, has been visiting Japan for talks on relations between the two countries.
On Monday (10th September), Mr. Sharp met the Japanese Foreign Minister Mr. Masayoshi Ohira in Tokyo. An official reception at the Foreign Ministry guest house was followed by talks between the two ministers later that day.
Mr. Sharp was accompanied to the reception by the Canadian Trade and Commerce Minister, Mr. Alastair Gillespie, who will lead the Canadian delegation at the meeting of General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade (GATT) to be held in Tokyo on Wednesday (12 September).
The two Canadian ministers had been invited to attend a Japan-Canada Ministerial conference the previous week, but this was postponed because of the rail strike in Canada.
