Background: A FESTIVE ATMOSPHERE COMPLETE WITH TRADITIONAL MUSICIANS AND DANCERS GREETED MR. HUGH SHEARER, PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA, WHEN HE ARRIVED IN ZAMBIA ON WEDNESDAY (1 OCT) FOR A TWO-DAY OFFICIAL VISIT.

MR. SHEARER MET ZAMBIA'S PRESIDENT, KENNETH KAUNDA, AT THE STATE HOUSE WHERE THE TWO LEADERS EXCHANGED GIFTS, AND ALSO HAD TALKS WITH MEMBERS OF THE ZAMBIAN CABINET, INCLUDING VICE PRESIDENT SIMON KAPWEPWE.

HE ALSO MET MEMBERS OF THE JAMAICAN COMMUNITY RESIDENT IN ZAMBIA, AND VISITED THE ZAMBIA COPPERBELT AND THE VICTORIA FALLS.

IN A JOINT COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AS MR. SHEARER LEFT FOR UGANDA, JAMAICA AND ZAMBIA CALLED ON THE WORLD'S RICH NATIONS TO IMPROVE AND NOT WORSEN THE TERMS OF TRADE OF A DEVELOPING WORLD.

IT ASKED THE RICH NATIONS TO GIVE APPROPRIATE GUARANTEES ON PRIMARY COMMODITY PRICES ON WHICH THE DEVELOPING WORLD DEPENDS FOR REVENUE AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE.

BUT IT ALSO SAID THE TWO COUNTRIES AGREED THEIR ECONOMIES MUST DEPEND ON SELF-RELIANCE AND UNFETTERED TRADE RATHER THAN ON INTERNATIONAL CHARITY.
