Transcript (Seq 2) girl: "I don't want it.

"There's no charge, you know. No one is forcing you to take it. Quite all right. You know the trouble is when you try to help the poor, it's one of the things that I have found...my association tires. Young man...it's people like you...the reason that you can't get a job.

"I don't have to do that."

"I'm sure that the reason that you can't oat a job is because of your extremely insolent attitude. Men like you come to my husband's business and try and work and of course he won't employ them.

"I haven't had any work for almost half a year."

"I can well believe it. I can well believe it."

"Well you know its a feeling, a general feeling of frustration because of the high degree of unemployment right now. I saw the card there, you know, that said the poor people are screwed, you know, that's what they, they feel they are screwed, they don't have what they deserve, you know, in our society and that is not a just society for them."

Background: Unemployed people and other poor from several Canadian cities flocked to Ottawa to demonstrate at the beginning of a week given to a federal-provincial conference on welfare. They carried banners calling for more benefits for the poor and the unemployed and for a meeting with the Minister of National Health and Welfare, Mr. John C. Munro.

As the demonstrators marched from the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa to the Canadian National Art Centre, a woman who described herself as the wife of a businessman joined the crowd and began handing out bread from her shopping basket. The demonstrators refused it.
