Background: SYNOPSIS: It wasn't so much a press conference, more a television performance by one of Mr. Smith's most eloquent deputy Minister's, Mr. Ted Sutton-Price. who was intro'd by a Press Officer.
The Rhodesian government is probably the least Press-minded in the world - which is hardly surprising since they have absolute control over everything broadcast on Rhodesian television and radio, and over most of what appears int eh newspapers.
So the rules for this conference were that we could listen to the Minister's statement, examine marked pages of the documents produced, and photograph them. But we couldn't ask any questions. Within those limitations, the documents were very interesting.
Mr. Sutton-Price said the documents had been held back for three weeks until the information they contained had been analysed and used by military intelligence. Other questions - such as details of the raid, the number of armed men killed, and above all the fate of women and children at the camp, remained unanswered.
