Background: Police from Kalamai and a Battalion of Army Engineers from Sparta have been rushed to the Tryfilia area of Greece to help victims and to clear debris from hundreds of houses severely damaged by the typhoon and torrential rains of last weekend (Nov 9-10).

The whole area - and particularly the villages of Hora, Ellinoklissia, Nefkis, Aetfolia and Vromonerion-present a scene comparable with the aftermath of an air-raid.

Hora has lost 150 of its 920 houses and 350 are uninhabitable. Almost all the remainder are badly damaged, many without roofs which were hurled off by the wind.

More than 10,000 olive trees were uprooted and thousands of acres of vineyards are ruined.

At present the human casualty list is four dead and 257 injured - 12 of them seriously.

The whole of the Tryfilia district has been proclaimed a 'Disaster Area' and will receive Government assistance on the same level as areas stricken by earthquakes.
