Background: Paris Firemen believe that the only way to test new types of fire-fighting equipment is on a genuine, blazing building. So today, with the co-operation of the city authorities, they purposely set fire to 23 condemned buildings and set to work with their new control methods - including new-type chemical extinguishers - to put them out again. Apart from providing first class practice for the firemen, the scheme is also clearing the site for the development of a new block of modern buildings.
