Background: THE POOR PEOPLE'S MARCH ARRIVED IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA, U.S.A., YESTERDAY (8 MAY), AND IMMEDIATELY THEIR LEADERS FOUND THEMSELVES IN CONFLICT WITH THE ALABAMA POLICE. MARCHERS WERE ATTEMPTING TO LAY A WREATH IN A CHURCH WHICH STANDS IMMEDIATELY NEXT TO THE CAPITOL ROTUNDA, WHERE THE BODY OF FORMER STATE GOVERNOR MRS. LURLEEN WALLACE IS LYING IN STATE.

THE MARCHERS, NOW SEVERAL HUNDRED IN NUMBER, WERE APPROACHING THE CHURCH, SCENE OF A WELL-REMEMBERED SERMON BY MARTIN LUTHER KING SOME 12 YEARS AGO. A CONFRONTATION WAS INEVITABLE:
SOME 80 MARCHERS SET OUT FOR THE CHURCH, BUT BEFORE REACHING THE CHURCH, POLICE BLOCKED THEIR WAY AND DEMANDED THAT THE MARCH BREAK UP. THEY WERE ASKED TO DISPERSE AS MEMBERS OF AN 'ILLEGAL MARCH', BUT AFTER A DISCUSSION OF STRATEGY, JOSEA WILLIAMS, ONE OF DR. KING'S CLOSE AIDES, PUT THIS SUGGESTION TO THE MARCHERS:
THE UNANIMOUS DECISION TO MARCH ANYWAY, LED TO FURTHER ELECTRIC DISCUSSIONS WITH POLICE. THE MARCHERS ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY LAW TO SAY THEY COULDN'T GO ON TO THE CHURCH AS INDIVIDUALS, AND NOT AS A GROUP, AND THERE WAS NO LAW AGAINST THAT. SO THEY APPROACHED IN SINGLE FILE.

DR. RALPH ABERNATHY, SUCCESSOR TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING AS HEAD OF THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, ALSO SPOKE IN MONTGOMERY YESTERDAY. HE SAID THAT NEITHER DR. KING'S DEATH, NOR THAT OF MRS. LURLEEN WALLACE, COULD STOP THE MARCH.
