Background: Following its policy of greater independence for its oil industry from foreign companies, the government of Ecuador has assumed control of its first oil-tanker.

In a ceremony presided over by Ecuador Navy Chief, Admiral Sergio Vasquez Pacheco, this week, the flag of the international oil company, Gulf, was hauled down from the masthead of the tanker 'Napo', and replaced by the colours of the Petroleum Fleet of Ecuador (FLOPEC). The handover was carried out on the deck of the 'Napo' while it was at anchor in the port of Esmeraldas.

Since it took power in Ecuador last year, the Nationalist Revolutionary Government of General Guillermo Rodriguez Lara has been carrying out a plan of nationalisation of the country's oil industry.

The plan reached its climax in January this year, when the Texaco-Gulf oil consortium and other foreign companies operating in Ecuador handed back 60 per cent of their concessions areas.
