Background: The Soviet water polo team defeated their Hungarian rivals two days in a row at a meet in the Moscow Olympic Centre on October 24. Both Soviet victories were hard-won, especially the second encounter with Hungary, where the result was 12-9. The game between the two long-time water polo rivals was played at a dynamic pace. Both teams used their skilful techniques throughout the game, and demonstrated well-considered tactical moves. The Hungarian side was playing especially well considering its national team had undergone extensive changes since the world championships in Ecuador recently. The Soviet team, which had won the Olympic and world championships, acquitted itself very well considering several of its star players did not take part in either game.
