Background: The biggest floods in the history of Rhodesia are due to strike at the Kariba Dam site within the next few days. Experts forecast that the volume of water which will flood through the narrow gorge will be greater than last year. This news follows the setback at Kariba yesterday when the Zambezi flooded the coffer dam, bringing work on the foundations there to a stand-still. The flooding was caused by a lack at the foot of the coffer dam. The damage is such that it could be three months before work can resume there. Large areas of land upstream of the dam will be inundated and it is expected that the Kariba airstrip will be put out of action by the flooding.
