This year's fair, described as the biggest ever held. opened amid a crescendo of firecrackers, according to news agency reports from The People's Republic of China.
The Fair this year -- its official title is the 1973 Spring Export Commodities Fair -- is concentrating on heavy machinery. Visitors were able to see a wide range of Chinese agricultural and industrial equipment.
But there were also large displays of textiles and manufactured goods in the main building situated in the heart of Canton's commercial district.
China now has trade links with more than 140 foreign countries, most of whom were reported to have sent delegations to the Fair. Chinese officials are hoping for record orders from them.
SYNOPSIS: Thousands of visitors to The People's Republic of China -- most of them foreign trade delegations -- attended Sunday's opening of the Canton Spring Trade Fair. The fair was inaugurated with a colourful display of balloons and a crescendo of fireworks.
Crowds on opening day were estimated at five thousand at the fair site in the heart of Canton's commercial district. Inside, the emphasis was on heavy machinery. Chinese-made agricultural machines drew great interest.
Besides agricultural machines, heavy industrial equipment dominated the fair's displays.
These and various manufactured goods are hoped to bring in record sales from buyers from over a hundred countries attending.
