Background: 27th of December completes three years of the landing of Soviet troops in Afghanistan. In many parts of the world Afghan refugees observed the anniversary by demonstrations outside the Soviet embassies demanding withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. In New Delhi apart from hunger strikes, hundreds of Afghan men, women and children marched to the Embassy of Soviet Union to protest. They carried placards and banners protesting against continued presence of Soviet troops on Afghan soil. The embassy was guarded by a strong contingent of Delhi police. Outside the Embassy Afghans shouted slogans, and symbolically burnt the Red flag of Soviet Union.
