The 15,000 square feet painting was completed in five years by 75-year-old David Siqueiros -- it depicts the past, present and future of humanity.
A Mexican millionaire sponsored the gigantic work of art and final costs have been estimated at six million dollars (about 2.4 million sterling).
SYNOPSIS: Mexico City's new Polyforum was officially inaugurated by President Luis Echeverria on Wednesday. The building is a striking example of modern architecture and contains the world's largest mural. Some 15,000 square feet are covered in a series of paintings depicting the past, present and future of humanity. The largest in the series, and perhaps the most well-known, is entitled 'March of Humanity' representing the struggle of man over misery.
President Echeverria arrived with the mural's painter, David Siqueiros, for the inauguration ceremony. Siqueiros took five years to complete the work, and initial costs have been estimated at six million dollars.
The Polyforum is part of a new hotel which will eventually cost some 80 million dollars. The 51-storey building will also contain shops, cultural arts centres and ???

President Echeversia addressed the crowd before performing the official ceremony. For David Siqueiros, it was the end of five years' work and the realisation of what he has termed as his masterpiece. According to close friends, he hopes to continue painting and has already outlined another series of ideas for murals.
