Background: Singapore's second International Book Fair opened last friday (28 April) with a display of works from nine countries.

Singapore's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Rajaratnam said in his opening speech that Singapore was becoming more of learning society, and emphasised his country's heavy reliance on ??? power.

More than eight thousand books from Germany, the Soviet Union, the United States, Taiwan, Britain, India, Pakistan, Hongkong, and Singapore are on display for the public until the fair closes on the 3rd of May.

Visitors are permitted to purchase any of the books during the fair, although the emphasis is on bulk supply contracts. There are also magazines and educational records in English, Chinese, German and other languages being displayed.

Last year's International Book Fair in Singapore attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Officials are predicting that this year's turn-out will be even higher.
