SALIM: "Mr. President, these reports and particularly the news of the executions are sad news indeed. It is, therefore, with a sense of sadness and concern for human life, which all of us in this organisation deeply cherish, and on behalf of my African colleagues, and in my own name request you as our President, as well as the Secretary-General of the organisation, to intervene with the Ethiopian Government on this matter. We request you and the Secretary-General to send messages in the name of the Assembly and in the name of humanity, appeal to the Ethiopian Government to spare the lives of all Ethiopians concerned."

GEBRE-SELASSIE: "I shall, of course, transmit to my Government promptly the views expressed here this afternoon, together with requests that I be supplied at the earliest possible moment with all the information and views in regard to this matter. If need be, I would make these clear in future. In the meantime, and in closing, allow me to give voice to the conviction that as her long history and tradition have shown, Ethiopia will remain faithful to her humanitarian ideals and to her unswerving devotion to the cause of peace and those of law at home and abroad, I thank you."

Background: The Chairman of Tanzania's delegation to the United Nations -- Mr. Salim -- urged the General Assembly on Wednesday (27 November) to appeal to the Government of Ethiopia to spare the lives of those detained.

Mr. Salim, acting on behalf of the Assembly's African group, took the initiative to all on the world body to act formally on this matter, following news of executions in Addis Ababa.

In reply to Mr. Salim, the Ethiopian delegate, Mr. Zewde Gebre-Selassie, said he would relay to his Government the sentiments expressed by the Assembly, which he understood to have been motivated by humanitarian considerations.

Later, Assembly President Said Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika and Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim agreed to send a joint appeal to spare the lives of people now detained in Ethiopia.

In a cable to Addis Ababa, they said reports that further executions were imminent had aroused great apprehension and profound anxiety on the part of the entire international community.
