The Championships. founded in The People's Republic of China in 1973, have aroused an exceptional amount of interest because of the possibility of pollical incident. Neither South Korea nor Taiwan nor Israel, nor a team representing the South Vietnamese Government has been invited. On the first day the Vietcong team angered in Jungle fatigues, announcing themselves as the representatives of the 'Republic of South Vietnam'.

SYNOPSIS: The controversial second Asian Table Tennis Championships got under way smoothly in Yokohama on Wednesday. The first events were the Men's and Women's Team matches.

As expected, the women of The People's Republic of China were too strong for the Laotian Pathet Lao team. The Chinese staged the first championships last year.

One of the day;s surprises was as victory by the New Zealand girls over the Vietcong. On the previous day the Vietcong had caused quite a stir by announcing themselves as the representatives of the Republic of South Vietnam.

There were no further incidents on Wednesday. Japan -- it is a Japanese player nearest the camera serving against Iraq -- did well in the Team Events as they did last year. As the hosts, Japan had not invited South Korea or Israel or a team representing the South Vietnamese government.
