    Background: PERGUSA, SICILY, ITALY

New Zealand's Mike Thackwell gained his seventh straight European Formula 2 championship race on July 29 at the Enna racetrack in Pergusa, Sicily. His Ralt RH6 Honda dominated the race early and maintained the lead over a field of 12 competitors during the 45-lap race. Brazil's Roberto Moreno, who took the lead for two brief laps, finished second, more than two seconds behind Honda team-made Thackwell. Third and fourth places went to BMW powered cars driven by Alessandro Nannini, of Italy, in his Minardi, and France's Pierre Petit, in a March 842. Thackwell's win stretched his unassailable lead in the European championship standings.
