    Background: TOKYO, JAPAN

Several hundred thousand Japanese workers gathered for a massive demonstration in Tokyo on Sunday (28 February) to demand tax cuts of about 1,000 billion yen (4.2 billion US dollars). The workers complained that during the past five years, as there has been no increase in the amount of non-taxable income, their purchasing power has been dwindling. The demonstration, in Yoyogi Park in central Tokyo, was addressed by the chairman of the Sohyo trade union organisation, Mitsuo Tomizuka, and the leader of the Socialist Party, Ichio Asukata. After the rally in the park, the demonstrators marched through the streets of Tokyo. So far the government, led by Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki, has rejected the demands, saying there are no financial resources to support tax cuts.
