    Background: JERUSALEM

The largest group of Israelis ever accused of terrorist offences appeared in a Jerusalem court on June 17, charged with carrying out numerous anti-Arab atrocities and planning to commit a series of others. Twenty two defendants, mainly West Bank settlement residents, stand accused of forming an underground network to drive out West Bank Arabs through a series of gun and bombing attacks between 1980 and this year. Of the original group of 27 persons accused, three have already pleaded guilty to terrorist activities, and one has been sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment through an earlier agreement of plea bargaining. Two further defendants, both Israeli military officers, have entered pleas of not guilty to charges of aiding those alleged to have carried out 1980 attacks in which two West Bank Arab mayors were severely maimed. Other charges include the killing of three Palestinian college students in a gun and grenade attack, plans to blow up Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque, and a recently discovered series of bombs planted aboard buses owned and used mainly by West Bank Arabs. The 22 accused supposedly belong to ultra-nationalist, deeply Orthodox factions which have openly espoused annexation of the West Bank by any possible means.
