DAYAN: "I mention that not as a condition that unless they leave for Israel (indistinct). I mentioned that about any attempt at freezing of any of the parties involved in the future that no, or other Arabs can come in. Relatives and others now in the Arab refugee camps, and the relatives of these families can come here and make a living, they should do so, and we shall agree with that. But at the same time there should not be any attempt at freezing the Israeli settlements. We are not talking about hundreds of settlements and thousands and thousands of (indistinct)like that. But I'm talking about the concept."

Mr Dayan said that on West Bank negotiations, there might be different approaches and demands which could not be bridged, in which case the status quo would remain and Israel's military government would stay. The decision to dismantle Jewish settlements in Sinai has yet to pass through the Knesset - the Israeli Parliament.

Background: Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan has stressed that agreements reached with Egypt at the meeting at Camp David in the United States were only frameworks. Speaking during an interview on Israel television on Wednesday (20 September) Mr Dayan said much remained to be negotiated. However he foresaw no problems in the implementation of the agreement with Egypt on the Sinai. Mr Dayan was asked whether he would allow refugees back into Israel from the West Bank in return for the continuation of Jewish settlements there.

SYNOPSIS: The next day, Israeli authorities moved to halt an illegal Jewish settlement near Nablus in the occupied West Bank of the Jordan. Unarmed soldiers carried out the evacuation. The squatters were mainly members of the Gush Emunim, or Faith Block, who believe in the God-given right of the Jewish people to all of the biblical land of Israel. Part of Prime Minister Begin's agreement with Egypt was that there would be no new settlements in the occupied area.

After the squatters refused to leave voluntarily, group of soldiers grabbed the men and carried them off individually from the rocky terrain. Other soldiers demolished the makeshift hut and tents in which a number of women and children had sheltered. Some of them had to be carried off also.
