Background: MORE THAN 100 EUROPEAN REFUGEES FROM THE REBEL-HELD TOWN OF ALBERTVILLE, CAPITAL OF NORTH KATANGA, ARRIVED IN BURUNDI ABOARD THE LAKE TANGANYIKA STEAMER "BARON DHANIS" ON TUESDAY.

AMONG THE REFUGEES ON THE UNARMED SHIP, WHICH WAS FLYING THE UNITED NATIONS AND RED CROSS FLAGS, WERE U.N. TECHNICIANS, BRITISH, UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN MISSIONARIES, AND MANY BELGIANS WHO HAD BEEN LIVING IN NORTH KATANGA.

THE SHIP HAD SAILED FOR ALBERTVILLE FIVE DAYS EARLIER, BUT HAD BEEN DELAYED FOR SIXTY HOURS WHILE NEGOTIATIONS WERE HELD WITH REBEL AUTHORITIES ABOUT WHO SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE CITY. THE NEGOTIATIONS WERE HANDLED BY A BRITISH DIPLOMAT, MR. PAUL FABIAN, WHO TRAVELLED FROM BUJUMBURA, IN BURUNDI ABOARD THE STEAMER.

AMONG THE REFUGEES WERE MR. AND MRS. ROBERT GREENHOW AND THEIR TWO CHILDREN FROM WINDSOR, ONTARIO. WITH THE OTHER MISSIONARIES THEY ARE STAYING WITH AN AMERICAN COUPLE, MR. AND MRS. JOHNSON, WHO HAVE SET UP A MISSION OUTSIDE BUJUMBURA.
