Background: AT HENLEY-ON-THAMES, NEAR LONDON TODAY, (JULY 2) ONE OF BRITAIN'S ANNUAL SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS BEGAN -- THE ROYAL REGATTA.

THE REGATTA WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1839. SINCE THEN, ROWERS HAVE BEEN SWEATING IT OUT FOR FOUR DAYS EACH YEAR, COMPETING ON THE THAMES QUIET WATERS FOR CUPS AND TROPHIES WHICH ARE AMONG THE HIGHEST HONOURS FOR THE ROWING WORLD.

IN 1851 PRINCE ALBERT, LATER THE PRINCE CONSORT, BECAME THE REGATTA'S FIRST ROYAL PATRON, AND GAVE IT THE COVETED 'ROYAL' TITLE.

CREWS COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO DO BATTLE ON THE WATER. TODAY'S OPENING EVENTS LEFT BRITISH COMPETITORS DISAPPOINTED. NORTH AMERICAN EIGHTS NARROWLY DEFEATED BRITISH OPPONENTS IN THE THAMES CUP HEATS.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY (USA) CAME HOME THREE QUARTERS OF A LENGTH AHEAD OF THE BRITAINS CHAMPIONS, SCOTTISH ARGONAUTS BOAT CLUB.

ANOTHER TEAM OF ARGONAUTS, THIS TIME FROM TORONTO, CANADA, TRAILED AT THE START OF THEIR RACE WITH LIVERPOOL VICTORIA, BUT AFTER THE THREE-QUARTER MARK THEY OVERHAULED THEIR OPPONENTS, AND CROSSED THE LINE IN 7 MINUTES 12 SECONDS. THE CANADIAN TEAM LOOKED NONE TOO COMFORTABLE AT THEIR VICTORY. DIETING TO BEAT A WEIGHT LIMIT FOR A FUTURE COMPETITION HAD SAPPED THEIR STRENGTH. HARVARD TOO SUCCEEDED IN SPITE DIFFICULTIES -- MANY OF THE TEAM HAVE BEEN STRUCK DOWN BY A MYSTERIOUS STOMACH AILMENT.

BRITAIN ALSO FAILED IN THE LADIES' CHALLENGE PLATE. A TRINITY COLLEGE CREW FROM CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY TRAILED HOME BEHIND A TEAM OF DUTCH STUDENTS.

THE AMERICANS, TOO HAD THEIR SETBACK. J.W. DIETZ, FROM THE NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB, LOST HIS DIAMOND CHALLENGE SCULLS HEAT TO A SWISS ROWER, WERNER ZWIMPFER. ZWIMPFER, AND OLYMPIC FINALIST LOST 3 LENGTHS AT THE START, BUT RECOVERED AND CAME HOME IN RECORD TIME.

BUT HENLEY IS MORE THAN MUSCLE STRAINING OVER OARS. IT IS ONE OF THE GREAT SOCIAL OCCASIONS OF SPORT, AND WHILE MEN COMPETE ON THE WATER, A GENTLER COMPETITION, FOR THE PRETTIEST DRESS, THE MOST STRIKING HAT, IS WAGED AMONG THE LADIES ON SHORE. EVEN IF THEY, TOO, CONCEDE VICTORY TO HANDSOME YOUNG MEN IN THE TRADITIONAL GLORY OF A STRAW BOATER.
