Background: The Soviet Prime Minister, Alexei Kosygin, arrived in Vienna on Monday (2 July) to begin a four-day tour of the country.
Mr. Kosygin was welcomed at Vienna airport by his counterpart in Austria, Chancellor Kreisky, and senior Austrian officials.
Before driving under heavy police escort to the city, the Soviet Leader was presented with a bouquet of flowers by a group of young Austrian children.
SYNOPSIS: It's the first time a Soviet Prime Minister has visited Austria for thirteen years. Mr. Kosygin himself had asked to spend some time in Vienna....accepting an invitation which had until now been standing open for six years.
Also at the airport to welcome the Soviet leader, was Professor Glasser, the chairman of the Austrian Russian Society.
Before he left the airport, Mr. Kosygin was presented with a bouquet of flowers from a party of young girls.
Hundreds of police have been assigned to ensure the Soviet leader's security. As he entered his car with the Chancellor, they were flanked either side by armed policemen. There was also a police motor-cycle escort, and a specially built open car carrying security men. Several hundred people lined the route, and others stayed the night outside his hotel, hoping to get a glimpse of the Soviet leader.
