Background: THE NORWEGIAN FOOD CENTRE WAS OPENED IN LONDON TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BY MR HALVARD LANGE, THE NORWEGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER. KING OLAV, WHO IS IN BRITAIN ON A VISIT, ATTENDED THE CEREMONY.

IN HIS ADDRESS, MR LANGE REFERRED TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT'S RECENTLY-IMPOSED IMPORT SURCHARGE. HE SAID IT WAS FORTUNATE THAT FOOD WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE RESTRICTION, BUT STRESSED THAT THE SURCHARGE BADLY AFFECTED NORWEGIAN EXPORTS, AS BRITAIN IN NORWAY'S BIGGEST MARKET.

HE THEN UNVEILED A PLAQUE COMMEMORATING THE OCCASION.

THE CENTRE WAS SPONSORED BY 37 COMPANIES, REPRESENTING FOOD PRODUCERS, BREWERS, MANUFACTURERS AND DISTRIBUTORS, WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE NORWEGIAN GOVERNMENT.

AFTER THE OPENING CEREMONY, THE OFFICIAL VISITORS TOURED THE BUILDING. THE INTERIOR FITTINGS ARE ALL NORWEGIAN PRODUCTS - FURNITURE, CULTERY, COOKING EQUIPMENT, WALL PANELLING, LIGHT FITTINGS AND TABLE LINEN.

IN THE RESTAURANT, THERE IS A BAR SERVING THE TRADITIONAL SCANDINAVIAN OPEN SANDWICHES, AS WELL AS HOT DISHES MADE TO ORIGINAL NORWEGIAN RECIPES.

THERE IS ALSO A RETAIL SHOP SELLING HUNDREDS OF ITEMS -- FROZEN SHRIMPS AND PRAWNS, SOFT HERRING ROES, FISH, CHEESES, SMOKED AND CURED SAUSAGES, AND DRIED SALTED MEATS AND FRUITS. FOR CUSTOMERS WISHING MORE EXOTIC TASTES THERE ARE REINDEER STEAKS, WHALE MEAT, KROTER CAKES WITH WHORTLEBERRY JAM.
