Background: The conflict between the French and Flemish-speaking Belgians was accentuated on 22 December, by a series of demonstrations. The date is the anniversary of the execution of Auguste Borms, who was shot for high treason after the Second World War.

The demonstrators were demanding amnesty for those condemned for their "Flamingantes" activities. They planned to march from Malines to Brussels, a distance of 35 kilometres (22 miles). However, 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the capital they were stopped by police, and promptly staged a "sit-in."
