Background: The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka, is continuing his 10-day tour of South East Asia. After visiting Singapore, he is now in Malaysia.
Mr. Tanaka arrived yesterday (Friday) in Singapore for a one-day visit. He was greeted at the airport by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. They later held talks on the international situation, particularly the oil crisis which is effecting both countries.
At a banquet last night (Friday) in his honour, Mr. Tanaka stressed Japan's desire for a just and lasting settlement of the Middle East conflict. He regretted that this conflict had triggered off an oil crisis which was having serious repercussions on economies of all countries in Asia. He also called for closer contact and cooperation between the peoples of Japan and Singapore.
