Background: Romanian President Nicolae Ceausescu arrived in Ethiopia on July 12, at the start of a five-nation African tour that will also take him to Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Sudan. Mr. Ceausescu, accompanied by his wife Elena, a first deputy Prime Minister of Romania herself, was greeted by Ethiopia's Head of State, Colonel Haile Menghistu Mariam at Addis Ababa airport. On July 13, Colonel Menghistu and President Ceausescu started their talks in Addis Ababa's Presidential palace. No details about the meeting have been revealed yet, but the Romanian new agency Agerpress said the purpose of Ceausescu's trip was to consolidate and intensity Romania's good relations and cooperation with the African states. It is also an expression of Romanian's consistent political and material support for the African countries in their struggle against colonialism, imperialism and racism, Agerpress added. Mr. Ceausescu, one of the most widely travelled of Soviet-bloc leaders, has visited 40 African countries and received 32 African Heads of State in Romania.
