Background: THE SITUATION IN CYPRUS WAS QUIET TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER SHOTS WERE FIRED AT A BRITISH PATROL NEAR THE BORDERLINE BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH QUARTERS OF NICOSIA DURING THE NIGHT. MEANWHILE THE AIRLIFT OF TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT FROM BRITAIN TO THE TROUBLED ISLAND GOES ON, AND BY SATURDAY ANOTHER 1,500 MEN WILL BE AT THE DISPOSAL OF THE NEW COMMANDER OF THE JOINT PEACE-KEEPING FORCE, MAJOR-GENERAL CARVER.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), PRESIDENT MAKARIOS MADE HIS FIRST PEACE-MAKING FLIGHT IN A BRITISH ARMY HELICOPTER. HE FLEW TO POLIS, A TOWN WHERE FIVE HUNDRED TURKS HAD SPEND THE PREVIOUS THREE DAYS IN A SCHOOL, SURROUNDED BY GREEK IRREGULARS. WHEN HE RETURNED TO HIS PALACE IN NICOSIA, THE ARCHBISHOP - WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE U.N. OBSERVER, GENERAL GYANI AND HIS MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR-SAID: "THE SITUATION IS EASIER. THE TURKS WERE FRIENDLY ". (AT THE SAME TIME, DR. KUTCHUK, LEADER OF THE ISLAND'S TURKISH COMMUNITY, WENT BY BRITISH ARMOURED CAR TO LIMASSOL, WHERE 20 TURKS WERE KILLED IN LAST WEEK'S GREEK ATTACK.)"
WITH NO IMMEDIATE END TO THE TROUBLES IN SIGHT, THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT HAS FORMED AN ARMED YOUTH ORGANISATION. PROVIDED WITH UNIFORMS AND WEAPONS, THE MEMBERS ARE UNDERGOING INTENSIVE TRAINING, UNDER THE PERSONAL SUPERVISION OF THE COMMANDER OF THE CYPRUS ARMY - GENERAL PANDELIDES. WHEN OUR CAMERAMAM WENT ALONG TO FILM THEM, THEY WERE ENTHUSIASTICALLY CARRYING OUT INFANTRY TRAINING.
