Background: At this press conference Specialist 3rd Class William A. Girard repeated his denial of the charge at the court that he had lured a Japanese woman to her death on a U.S. firing range last January 30th. To a reporter's question how he felt while he was in the Maebashi courtroom, Girard wearily said, "How would anyone feel in my situation?" Girard was flanked by two Army officers at the press conference, Maj. Stanley F. Levin, his army legal advisor, and Brig. Gen. Charles Decker, Assistant judge advocate-general of the U.S. Army sent to Japan to observe the Girard trial by Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker.
