Background: President Makarios of Cyprus baptised hundreds of Africans at a ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Church at Kihutu in Kenya on Sunday (21 March). The Archbishop also ordained an African priest. Kihutu is under the shadow of Mount Kenya, 60 miles (96 kms.) from Kenya's capital, Nairobi.
Today (Monday) President Makarios met President Jomo Kenyatta at his home at Gatundu. The Archbishop's first visit to Kenya was under less happy circumstances. During his campaign for the independence of Cyprus, the Archbishop was detained and passed through Kenya on his way to exile in the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean.
