Background: BRITAIN WON THE PRINCE OF WALES CUP -- THE INTERNATIONAL TEAM EVENT -- AT THE ROYAL INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW IN LONDON THIS EVENING (THURSDAY). THE BRITISH TEAM OF FOUR, INCLUDING TWO WOMEN RIDERS, HAD A TOTAL OF 12 FAULTS.

IRELAND WERE SECOND WITH 24 AND ITALY THIRD WITH 32. FRANCE TOOK FOURTH PLACE WITH 35 FAULTS AND SWITZERLAND WERE FIFTH AND LAST WITH 56.THE EVENT, HELD AT THE WHITE CITY STADIUM, WAS DECIDED ON TWO ROUNDS WITH THE BEST THREE IN EACH TEAM COUNTING.

BRITAIN TOOK A FIRM GRIP ON THE COMPETITION IN THE FIRST ROUND WHEN THREE OF HER RIDERS JUMPED CLEAR TO GIVE A PERFECT SCORE. IRELAND'S TEAM, AFTER INCURRING 12 FAULTS IN THE FIRST ROUND, MATCHED BRITAIN IN THE SECOND, BUT COULD NOT NARROW THE GAP.

THE ITALIANS RUINED THEIR CHANCES WITH A DISAPPOINTING FIRST ROUND IN WHICH THEY COLLECTED 20 FAULTS, BUT, LIKE IRELAND, MATCHED BRITAIN IN THE SECOND. IT WAS THE SAME STORY FOR THE FRENCH TEAM, EXCEPT THEY WERE FAULTED 23-1/4 TIMES IN THE OPENING ROUND. SWITZERLAND, COMPETING FOR THE FIRST TIME, FARED DISASTROUSLY, CONCEDING 36 FAULTS IN THE FIRST JUMP-OFF.

PRINCESS MARINA PRESENTED THE CUP TO COLONEL N.A.KINDERSLEY ON BEHALF OF THE WINNING BRITISH TEAM:MISS ANNELI DRUMMOND-HAY(RIDING MERELY-A-MONARCH),MISS ANN TOWNSEND(DUNBOYNE),DAVID BARKER(MISTER SOFTEE) AND HARVEY SMITH(WARPAINT).
