    Background: On Thursday (2 May) Britain recognised the new Portuguese regime of General Antonio de Soinola.

    The announcement was made soon after Portugal's Socialist leader Mario Soares had talks with the British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, and the Foreign Secretary James Callaghan, On Wednesday (1 May) Mr. Soares flew to London from Lisbon when he was among the guests at the country's first May Day rally in living memory. (Visnews Production 4308/74 refers).

    Before going to Downing Street to meet Mr. Wilson, Mr. Soares held a news conference during which he expressed the hope there would be a ceasefire as quickly as possible between Portugal's armed forces and the liberation movement in Portuguese Africa.
