Background: INTRODUCTION Algiers Sporting Club, outsiders in the running for the Algerian Football Cup, caused a mild sensation when they defeated African champions, Mouloudia Club of Algiers, favourites for the title, in an eighth-round cup-tie in algiers on Friday evening (11 February).
SYNPOSIS: Almost continuous rain before and during the match made the tartan surface at the Fifth of July stadium very slippery But it made little difference to underdogs Algiers sporting Union who attacked continuously for the first 30 minutes of the game. Only several spectacular saves from Mouloudia's keeper Ait Mouhoub kept his side in the game.
Mouloudia showed glimpses of the class that won them the African championship and made them hot favourites for the Algerian Football Cup. Ait Hamouda's centre from deep on the left pierced the Sporting Union defence and Bensli wrong-footed a powerful shot against the cross bar.
Despite the numerous chances by both sides, particularly sporting Union , the defences held firm. The slippery surface of the artificial pitch also contributed to the scoreless first half.
The African champions hit back after half time, and played with more confidence. They pressed the Sporting Union defence and forced them to take desperate measures.
The determination of the sporting Union players continued to keep them on an even footing with their supposedly more talented opposition, and they managed to keep the nil-all deadlock right up to full time.
With the game in extra time, sporting Union's persistence was rewarded when they unleashed a powerful attack down the left, and Deraousi scored in the 93rd minute, putting them unexpectedly into the next round of the cup.
